The American Hotel was built in 1847 by Nicholas LaRue. After being vacant for more than 30 years, current owners Doug Plummer and Garth Roberts purchased the decaying structure for $18,000 at tax sale in 1996.

After an extensive renovation, the American Hotel re-opened its doors May 23, 2001. With the help of The New York Times and Rachel Ray, the American Hotel has become a favorite getaway to thousands of visitors throughout the year, initiating a Village wide revitalization.
